There are six known Ashtanga series practiced today from the Yoga Karunta. It is believed that only Pattahbi Jois's grandson, Sharath, currently practices the 6th series. The primary series, the most commonly known, is dedicated to detoxifying the corporeal body. The intermediate series and beyond, begin to purify the nervous system and electrical body thru extensions and balancing asanas. Most Ashtangis are content to devote themselves to the exhilaration effects of the primary series which can take a lifetime to understand. Indeed, it is believed there is a never any “mastery” of yoga, simply deeper connection.
The primary series of Ashtanga is prescribed sequence of Hatha Yoga asanas linked through “vinyasa”. Vinyasa means breath married to motion. Every breath in the primary series is accounted for, where it is in the five ujjayi breaths per pose, or in the motions linking them. The breakdown of motions is genius, a basic blueprint for any dynamic flow sequence. |
